Job Aids for Copyright Considerations
Every autumn, faculty and curriculum developers at institutions of higher education receive lengthy, boring documents cataloging the copyright issues they should keep in mind when assigning and distributing content. And every autumn, the majority don't bother to read these documents or change their habits. As a result, many curriculum developers in higher ed inadvertently use copyrighted material improperly and in the process, leave themselves open to legal challenges.
I designed a tab interaction with Articulate Storyline and created a resource evaluation spreadsheet with Google Sheets in order to help faculty and curriculum developers avoid copyright issues when developing courses.
But how can we inspire users to engage willingly with compliance resources like these? I created a short animated video with Vyond as a mini “campaign” advertising the resources. The video addresses a key misconception about copyright issues and directs viewers to the resources.
View all three components of the project below.
-
Tab Interaction
This simple but intuitively designed tab interaction enables curriculum developers to quickly grasp the main considerations involved in determining fair use of copyrighted material. I set conditions on each button to enable the subtle hover effects.

Google Sheets Resource Assessment tool
This resource assessment tool built with Google Sheets enables curriculum developers and managers to quickly assess resources assigned in courses. I used conditional formatting to make it easy to determine the legality of assigning and distributing a given resource by answering a series of straightforward questions. To reinforce the rationale for each consideration for curious users, I provided a concise explanation to the right of the checklist.
The final step: Fair use
resource “campaign”
How can we motivate learners to engage with compliance resources (and not just rely on a “push” strategy through an LMS)? I realized I needed a mini “campaign” teaser to:
let developers know fair use is more tricky than it seems; and
direct them to the resources I created.
I scripted and developed this short video in Vyond to do just that.
